Merric was quite relieved to hear that. He’d have rather not come all this way just to find out it truely was a bad time and have to leave. Though he did wonder what happened between him and the Medon ambassador, he didn’t ask as he felt it wasn’t his business whatsoever.
“Ah, it is of no big trouble at all,” Merric said, waving his hands slightly in front of him with a smile. “I’m just happy we’re able to finally chat. We don’t get to do that very often anymore.” Ever since Merric had left for Khadein some years ago, communication between the two became very little as he began to spend much of his time studying the ways of magic. It had pained him a bit to do that, but he knew he had no other choice at the time. And while he had hoped that this lack of communication would change after the war, much to his chagrin, it hadn’t.
When Merric heard Marth’s offer, he perked his head up and smiled happily. “I would absolutely love to!” he replied, excited for both the chat and the tea. Since becoming a student under the Bishop Wendell, Merric had developed a love for tea, so if tea is ever mentioned he’d get pretty happy about it. “Just lead the way and I’ll gladly follow.”
“Please then, come in!” Marth said brightly, smiling that they had finally got their chance to catch up. It would have been sad for Merric to have gone back to Khadein without them getting a chance to speak. They were of course both very busy and lived so far apart these days, so much so that any opportunity was rare and precious.
Marth led Merric through the courtyard hoping his winces weren’t too noticeable. The beautiful flower beds had been utterly ruined and his sister’s beautifully kept medicinal herb bushes were destroyed completely. They weren’t used to having wyverns in the castle, and its inner open spaces simply were meant for great stomping creatures. So the occasionally Pegasus liked to wander out of its stable and nibble on the flowers, much to the irritation of the gardeners, but wyverns…they were a completely different matter.
“The ambassador rode a wyvern to get here,” he informed Merric, who was bound to be wondering about all the destruction, “It seems wyverns are even more temperamental than horses…I don’t remember Minerva’s wyvern ever going on quite such a rampage but well, I’m sure that man would try the patience of even a wy…” Marth stopped himself and gave a small laugh. No! He wasn’t meant to say anything bad about the ambassadors or Jaegan would scold him like a child again. Well, Jaegan wasn’t around and, no, it was just better not to consider it.
Marth called the attention of a passing maid as they entered the main part of the castle. He asked her politely to see if the west balcony (the one facing an unruined courtyard) was set up for afternoon tea for two. She curtsied and hurried off leaving the two of them to walk up to the balcony in question.
“So how is your life in Khadein?” He asked Merric cheerfully. It was a conversation starter if ever there was one and besides, he was intrigued. He hadn’t been to Khadein since the way and he was genuinely curious to what it was like on a daily peaceful basis.
Smiling, Merric followed Marth inside, excited about this. He really wanted to catch up with his friend right now. However, as he walked through the courtyard, he looked around and blinked. He.. never remembered the flower beds being this destroyed before.. Right when he was about to ask about it, Marth beat him to it and told him what happened. Merric nodded in understanding.
“I see. I would imagine that such beautiful flowers would be no match for the claws of Wyverns.” As he walked past Elice’s now destroyed medicinal herb bushes he winced slightly. She was definitely not going to be happy about this.. And from what Marth was saying when he continued, this ambassador that visited must have been quite.. horrendous. Or at least annoying.. Something he’d believe if the man would let a Wyvern do such a thing to these flower beds!
Merric waited patiently as Marth spoke with a maid about the west balcony. After she hurried off, he continued to follow the Prince up to the balcony. “Hm?” he let out once he heard Marth speak. “..Oh! Well.. It’s been quite well! The weather has been gratious to us these past couple weeks, giving us well need sunny skies with plenty of wind. Perfect for practicing my spells.” He chuckled slightly before continuing. “Everyone in Khadein has also been helping to rebuild what was destroyed during the war. I’ve given my hand with rebuilding the School and other buildings as best I could. But.. well, i’m not much of a builder, heh. However, much of the city had been rebuilt now and the School went back in session some weeks ago. Although.. I’ve began to spend less time at the School now. After Master Wendell became Khadein’s senior mage and embarked on a journey, I’ve been spending my time learning spells on my own. When I do go to the School though, it’s mainly to help some of the students with their studies.” Merric paused before continuing. “You know.. I’ve really begun to enjoy helping others with magic. I think i’d really like become a magic teacher someday.”
Looking up at Marth, he gave a small smile. “What about you, Marth? How’s life been here in Altea?”
Marth knew he was going to have some explaining to do when Elice returned from her journey around Altea. (The trip concerned orphanages and hospitals, Elice hadn’t told him the details, probably because she had everything under control by herself.) Still, there was some time left, they could hopefully get to some semblance of order before she came back…those bushes were rare though.
He listened with great interest to Merric’s description. He had never been to Khadein in peace time and the very name was tainted with his memories of Gharnef and all the monstrosities that wicked sorcerer had committed… However every time he heard of Merric’s life in Khadein those thoughts were replaced with a much brighter outlook. He heard tales of learning, busy days and great progress with the reconstruction. Marth knew one day he would have to visit, however when would he ever have the time? One day though, one day he would.
“I think you would make a wonderful teacher,” he replied
Marth couldn’t help but smile when he heard of Merric’s ambitions. He thought his best friend would make an excellent teacher, and a well-loved one at that. His magical skill was of course amazing but he was also a person of such patience and kindness that Marth thought any aspiring young mages would love to have him a teacher. As for his place in Altea…he wish he could have something as aspiring and hopeful to look forward too on a personal level, but the entire country was definitely becoming a brighter place.
“It seems Altea has become a much more notable point on the map,” he said, “Merchants, ambassadors, all kinds of official travellers have been coming and going lately and it’s made the people proud and very happy. Trade is booming and re-construction has been happening a lot swifter than anyone can imagine with such enthusiasm for our country spreading across the continent. A week doesn’t go by where there isn’t at least half a dozen meetings with foreign ambassadors or diplomats, we’ve been quite overwhelmed by it all. Caeda and I have been delegating between us but we seem loaded with documentation and trade proposals wherever we turn.” Marth gave a little laugh, “We get some relaxation time though, Jaegan steps in occasionally and demands we give it a day. I’ve been trying to master riding lately, Frey and Cain even picked out a horse for me. I’m…a little slow, but I’m getting there!”
